SPARTA _ Colleen Burdsall has been known to point to indicate where she hopes to hit the ball.

Burdsall, Sparta's senior first baseman, has been doing it since travel ball. It's something she learned from John Casey, her youth coach.

Boonton, the No. 13 seed, raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on the way to a 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded Park Ridge in North Jersey Section 1, Group I opening-round play on Tuesday, May 21.

Anna Lee Smith (3 for 4, three stolen bases) led off the game with a single and stole second before Kim Cacciabeve smacked an RBI double, the first of her three hits. Kelly Whritenour also drove in a run with a base hit. The third run came across on an error.

Kylie Morgan, a senior right-hander, scattered six hits, struck out four and walked none. Morgan knocked in the Bombers' fourth run with a single in the sixth inning.

Cacciabeve also tripled. Carly McDaniel had a single and stolen base for Boonton (16-9).

West Morris 6, Cranford 0

The Wolfpack took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on the way to a shutout victory over Cranford in North Jersey Section 2, Group III first-round play on Tuesday, May 21.

Emily Rubright walked and came around to score on a throwing error, giving West Morris its first run. Allie McCourt scored on a squeeze play on Courtney Chase's bunt. Spilman doubled and scored on Kelsey Brown's RBI single.

Spilman finished 2 for 4, including a double, and drove in a run. Chase went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Brown, who had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run.  Jamie Fesinstine pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks. Cranford's Julie Saragusa doubled in the sixth inning to halt Fesinstine's no-hitter.

Whippany Park 16, University 0

Brittany Funicelli's five-inning no-hitter, which featured 12 strikeouts, spurred Whippany Park in its first round North Jersey Section 2, Group I game on Tuesday, May 21.

The Wildcats (20-6) had a number of hitting standouts, including Sam Mellea, who tripled and drove in three runs, and Rachel Grabowski, who finished with two RBIs. Jenn Sanislo, Ashley Belott and Alexa Cozzarelli also knocked in runs for Whippany Park.

All of Whippany Park's scoring was done over the first two innings.

Roxbury 7, Chatham 6

An outfield error in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 6-6 deadlock and lifted the Gaels over Chatham in a North Jersey Section 2, Group II first-round game on Tuesday, May 21.

Ashley Campbell was at bat with one out and a runner on second when the miscue occurred. Taylor Dash rapped out three hits and scored twice and Campbell and Ally Snyder had two hits apiece for Roxbury (14-9). Sammie Darling went the distance, striking out four and yielding six hits.

For Chatham, Kendall Davies and Stephanie Viscovich had two RBIs apiece. The Cougars are 13-14.

Jefferson 3, West Milford 1

The Falcons, behind Melissa Jurkiewicz's five-hitter, earned a quarterfinal-round date with Demarest by beating West Milford in a North Jersey Section 1, Group III opening-round game on Tuesday, May 21.

Jurkiewicz, a junior righty, notched seven strikeouts and walked two for Jefferson (21-6).

Her teammates backed her with a seven-hit attack. Anna Carlson and Caitlyn Dougherty had RBIs.

Hanover Park 9, Bernards 0

Defending sectional champion Hanover Park received two hits and three RBIs from Raquel Mogavero and Sam Snyder fired a one-hitter in North Jersey Section 2, Group II first-round action on Tuesday, May 21.

Snyder, a junior, notched eight strikeouts for the Hornets (17-6).

Chrissy Amendola contributed two hits, one of them a triple, and knocked in two runs.

Morris Knolls 11, Passaic 0

Gina Nappi went 3 for 3, including a double, and Madi Housel went 2 for 3 with a double to spur Morris Knolls in North Jersey Section 1, Group IV first-round play on Tuesday, May 21.

Winning pitcher Kim Felix allowed one hit - a double to Desiree Rodriguez - and struck out four in the five-inning game.

Morris Knolls, now 22-5, scored eight runs over the first two innings.

Pequannock 5, Wallkill Valley 0

The hitting and pitching of Christina Brizek figured greatly in the Golden Panthers' opening-round state tournament victory over the Rangers on Tuesday, May 21.

Brizek knocked in two runs with a base hit. Also the winning pitcher, she had seven strikeouts and surrendered only one hit.

Nicole Hernandez, Eleni Lutas, Bridget Carr and Kellyann McClain had two hits apiece to fuel Pequannock's 12-hit attack. The Golden Panthers, the defending Group II champions, improved to 20-4.

Butler 6, Hasbrouck Heights 0

The Bulldogs, buoyed by Larissa Spellman's two-hitter, blanked Hasbrouck Heights in North Jersey Section 1, Group I action on Tuesday, May 21.

Spellman had 10 strikeouts and four walks for Butler (18-7).

Aleks Apkarian, a freshman shortstop, rapped out two hits and knocked in two runs. Brianne Lipinski, Taylor Russnak and Alexandria Spellman drove in the Bulldogs' other runs.

JFK-Iselin 1, Morristown 0

Kayla Coleman's suicide squeeze in the fourth inning for JFK-Iselin accounted for the game's lone run in this North Jersey Section 2, Group III first-round game on Tuesday, May 21.

The Colonials' Joanna Lee had a pair of hits. Mollie Forman drew two walks.

Nicole Rhoades absorbed the loss despite allowing only four hits. Rhoades registered nine strikeouts for Morristown (11-10).

Randolph 2, Hackensack 0

Kelly O'Neill allowed one hit and Amanda Magadan spurred the attack by going 3 for 4 with three stolen bases in North Jersey Section 1, Group IV action on Monday, May 20.

O'Neill, who struck out six, and Cynthia Meringer drove in runs for the Rams (16-9).

Meringer and Kayla Johnson had two hits apiece for the winners.

Chatham 3, Governor Livingston 1

Chatham scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 deadlock and went on to defeat Governor Livingston on Monday, May 20.

McCall Moore and Kendall Davies had singles and RBIs for the Cougars (13-13). Raleigh Heap tripled and scored a run. Chatham's fourth hit came off the bat of Elizabeth Silveira.

Anya Raadam pitched the first five innings, striking out seven, walking one and allowing one hit before giving way to Susie Wolsch.

Whippany Park 15, Villa Walsh 0

Rachel Grabowski and Ashley LoBell had three hits and three RBIs each when the Wildcats shut out Villa Walsh on Monday, May 20.

Among Grabowski's hits was a double. LoBell scored twice. Jamie Rehus tripled and drove in a pair of runs and Alison Gleichmann contributed two hits and knocked in two runs for Whippany Park (19-6).

Veronica Manley had three hits for Villa Walsh (5-17).

Montville 7, Mendham 3

The Mustangs, behind three hits each by Sammie Booth and Brittany Presto, beat Mendham on Monday, May 20.

Booth homered and had an RBI. Presto also knocked in a run for Montville (18-9). Emily Mulligan finished with two hits and drove in a run.

The Minutemen received an RBI from Tess Madarasz.

Mount St. Dominic 4, Morris Knolls 2

The Golden Eagles, whose offense was sparked by Mia Baldassari and Maggie Shaw, were defeated by Mount St. Dominic on Monday, May 20.

Baldassari and Shaw had two hits apiece. Each one knocked in a run.

For Mount St. Dominic, Helyna Bissell singled twice, doubled and knocked in a run. Olivia Gemma's double drove in a run.

EAST HANOVER _ It was a night for taking as Hanover Park clinched the Liberty Division of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference with an 8-3 victory over Parsippany on Wednesday, May 15.

The Hornets gave, though, too, raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in memory of Kristen Hogan's mother, Judy, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2008.

BOONTON _ Not once did Jefferson's Katie Hatler clip a hurdle.

Hatler's form was precise, her movement fluid.
