Dominant 2nd half key for Chatham in TOC

CHATHAM _ The Chatham girls lacrosse team gained a new fan on Saturday, June 4 when coach Helen McCutcheon Oliver gave birth to a son, William Peter, several hours before the Cougars' thrilling win over Moorestown in the Group III final. McCutcheon Oliver's absence left Chatham in the capable hands of Kelsey Ryan and other assistans but very little has changed. The fourth-seeded Cougars, up by only one goal at halftime, continued to roll, defeating Haddonfield 15-5 in a Tournament of Champions quarterfinal three days after securing their much-desired state title. "This is huge," said Chatham junior attack Stella Straka,…

Chatham rallies, nabs MCT title

MOUNT OLIVE _ Chatham’s Kayleigh Coughlin put it simply. Capturing the Morris County Girls Lacrosse Tournament title boiled down to one thing: "Wanting it... Badly." “Talent can only bring you so far,’’ Coughlin said. “It comes down to the grit. How much you want it and how much you are willing to work together to get it.’’ Coughlin had three goals and two assists and defending champion Chatham rallied from an early three-goal deficit to defeat Morristown 11-8 in the MCT final on Saturday, May 14 in damp weather conditions at Mount Olive High School. Ashley Kiernan scored four times…

Chatham, Mendham headed to MCT final

MONTVILLE _ Chatham’s Ashley Kiernan dubbed it the “redemption tour” and now the first leg of it is officially over. Kiernan and the Cougars wanted to clash with Mountain Lakes and Morristown, two teams they had lost to early in the season, again. On Wednesday, May 11, the defending champion Cougars, seeded eighth, avenged their setback to the Lakers in a Morris County Girls Lacrosse Tournament semifinal, notching a 13-7 victory at Montville High School. Morristown, which defeated Mendham 12-7 in the other semifinal, is next in Chatham’s sights. "I'm excited about this win and about getting a second chance…

BHS lacrosse honors late teacher

BOONTON _ Haylee Roller recalls Ms. Kraa, Boonton High School's long-time art teacher, telling her to "Make it more minty." And Roller, a senior, took the advice of Kraa and has carried it through all four years of high school and likely will live by the mantra for the remainder of her life. "The saying encouraged students to slow down on their work and focus on the small details," Roller explained. "In a way, this changed my outlook on life, to slow down and take more time to enjoy the little things, rather than rushing through everything." On Wednesday, April…

McIntyre, Mendham reign in MCT

MONTVILLE _ The players on the Mendham girls lacrosse team have always felt like they had a target on their backs this year, however, none of their Morris County opponents were able to keep them from hitting their goal. The Minutemen reclaimed the Morris County Tournament title after an eight-year drought with an 11-8 triumph over Chatham in the Morris County Tournament final held at Montville High School on Saturday, May 4. Megan Graziano and Regan Hakes registered hat tricks and tournament Most Valuable Player Kelly McIntyre had two goals and one assist to pace the top seeded Minutemen. Lizzie…

Lakers, denied by Garabo, fall in OT

MOUNTAIN LAKES _ Anything can happen in girls lacrosse state tournament play. All a team needs is a hot goalie and the ability to execute and it can find itself with a title. Colonials are MCT champs

MONTVILLE _ Morristown needs to work a little bit on its celebrations. Other than that, everything went just as the Colonials dreamed it would when they made their first appearance in the Morris County Girls Lacrosse Tournament final. Annika Begley scored four goals and Ava Plott had a hat trick in Morristown's 10-6 triumph over Mountain Lakes in the MCT final held at Montville High School on Saturday, May 5. Sarah Chupak scored twice and Callie Sundin had a goal and two assists for the top-seeded Colonials. Faith Reilly fired a hat trick for second-seeded Mountain Lakes, which was seeking…

Monteleone, Lakers gain MCT final

MONTVILLE _ Scoring a goal just before halftime always gives the lacrosse team that scored it a boost. On Thursday, May 3, it helped elevate Mountain Lakes to a 9-6 Morris County Tournament semifinal victory over Mendham. Sarah Monteleone scored six goals to pace the Lakers. Breanna Wilson notched five assists and Faith Reilly added two goals and one assist. Second-seeded Mountain Lakes, the two-time defending MCT champ, advances to play top-seeded Morristown in the MCT final scheduled for Saturday, also at Montville. Records set in Morristown victory

WASHINGTON TWP. (Morris) _ Plenty of personal records were set in the Morristown girls lacrosse team's 20-5 victory over West Morris on Thursday, April 26 but the Colonials players didn't seem to be keeping count. The only score, however, that was important to them was on the scoreboard. Callie Sundin had six goals, Annika Begley had four goals and three assists and Nicole Ferrara had three goals and five assists for Morristown. Begley scored her 200th varsity goal and Ferrara had her 100th career assist during the contest but the only thing that mattered was that the Morristown team continued…

McIntyre, Peck propel Mendham

MENDHAM _ Mendham's 8-7 girls lacrosse victory over Chatham on Saturday, April 14 doesn't make up for the Cougars' victories which eliminated the Minutemen in county and state tournaments last year but it sure felt good. Kelly McIntyre scored twice, including her 100th varsity goal, and freshman Ashley Peck scored three goals, including the eventual gamewinner for Mendham. Jess Beneducci also had two goals for the Minutemen (3-4).Paige Guenther and Lizzie O'Neill had two goals apiece for Chatham (3-4).
